Bridge That Shine Over The Capital City

On the 14th October 2017, Brunei Darussalam made another historic moment. The Capital city of Brunei Darussalam, Bandar Seri Begawan was an influx of people with the different race coming together as one to witness the Grand Opening of the bridge that links the capital and Sungai Kebun in Mukim Lumapas. The official opening of this bridge was in the conjunction of the Golden Jubilee of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali’s Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan Dan Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam’s Accession to the Throne. (Saturday night the lights was up!).

The bridge is named after Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha, the Queen consort of Brunei as the wife of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah. The event of the Grand Opening of the bridge started at 7:30 in evening but people came early as before 4 in the afternoon to find the right spot to watch the fireworks with their family and friends, it was fascinating. This visualized how excited everyone is on the weekend. While waiting for it, there was a lot of food stalls and vendors entertaining the people who were welcome to lighten up the capital city of Brunei Darussalam.

We knew that going to Bandar Seri Begawan would definitely be jammed, but we did not expect the traffic congestion would be as far as at Gadong. Luckily we knew a water taxi driver that would fetch us from Kiulap and booked a ride two hours early. phew!! definitely a life saver!

We parked at the Kiulap area and went to Bandar by water taxi which saved us lots of time from hours of waiting for a short five minutes ride. Walking our way to the nearest place, not that close to the bridge but close enough! We bought food and drinks from our local vendors, seeing those trilled faces (and tired ones too), children running around with their LED lights sword (it’s a toy so don’t worry!) and headbands, it’s the most beautiful scenery. Probably the second time of this month that Bandar fully alive with light and crowds. We could also hear traditional instruments being played at the Tarindak D’Seni Building to open ceremony.

Red coloured spectacular light bright up the late evening on top of a newly built bridge, screaming joy of different colours one after another. There was also the procession of boats and floats with vibrant colours that was the represented by the Government and Non-Government agencies.

Overall the event was remarkable, we enjoyed the 20 minutes worth of fireworks as it was breathtaking! However, we were not able to see all of the float, boats and the second firework due to the crowds. We were so fortunate to get the chance and experience another historical moment here in Brunei Darussalam.
